Designing home and building with passion, Dwell Homes is no stranger to crafting interesting and tactile homes with a difference. Here we meet Lena Doull, the creator of their beautiful interiorshoodie.
“What the most important consideration when it comes to our homes and interiors? Proportion!”
“My style is always developing. I am constantly inspired by materials and textures such as boarded concrete, timber and stone. This often comes through into the finished product, with visually exciting textural variations found throughout my designs making effective use of inner volumes and reflecting a connection with the exterior architecture. Strong horizontal lines and correct proportions are often characteristic of my work, which could be categorized broadly as contemporary with natural palette”, – says Lena.
What makes Designing Home with Passion unique?
Characterised by the use of natural materials, our architectural design and build solutions are tailored to reflect each client‘s personal aesthetic, while effortlessly blending design, natural materials and environmental sensitivity. Whether clients have a budget of two hundred thousand or two million, our aim is to build homes using methods that minimize environmental impact and prohibitive energy bills.
It is essential that we begin to understand that building smaller isn’t about a compromise of quality or living; rather, it is about designing and building smarter. Designing home smaller is often more sustainable, and it is our aim to provide functional, beautiful solutions. Dwell Homes is really pleased to be associated with the new Superhome Movement in Christchurch, which supports healthy, energy efficient new homes built to higher design and performance standard.
Tell us a little about how Dwell Interiors fits in.
As the interior design division of Dwell Homes, Dwell Interiors collaborates closely with our team of architects, designers and engineers to create stylish and compact, low maintenance interiors. We offer a comprehensive design service which includes kitchen and bathroom design, full colour scheme, lighting design and so forth.
It is a design service available to both individuals and clients of Dwell Homes as part of the architectural design and construction of their new home.
Do you have a favourite project you have worked on?
Every project for designing home is special for different reasons. Having been immersed in architecture and building for a long time, I relish the challenges that each project brings and aim to achieve the highest of standards, and to go beyond client expectations, every time.
The interior design of our Hills Road show home has a special place in my heart as it demonstrates that small is beautiful. The kitchen is one of my favourite designs (so far) and I will always think of it as a developing moment in my career as well as a stepping stone for Dwell Interiors to become a member of the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association (NKBA).
What the most important consideration when it comes to our homes and interiors?
Proportion! Our most successful collaborations demonstrate an understated elegance with simplicity of line to achieve a balance between function and aesthetics.
As an architectural design and build company, our emphasis is on cleverly designed spaces and careful use of innovative new products. Our interiors are a natural response to the architecture of the house, and use materials such as timber as a dominant finish to unite the interior with the exterior for a complete cohesive package.
What are your big trend predictions?
Visually, I believe 2016-2017 is going to see us embrace more textural elements such as aluminium and zinc on the exterior of our homes; with timber veneers and architectural plywood linings set to become centre stage when it comes to our interiors.
However, my biggest prediction for the year ahead is downsizing. As well as being more affordable, smaller living is about embracing a highly considered design concept while reducing your environmental footprint.
